SERVICES OF HOLY SATURDAY – April 18, 2009
On Holy Saturday morning, Vespers and Divine Liturgy of St. Basil is served. Fifteen Old Testament readings are read. Vespers transitions to Divine Liturgy with the reading of the epistle. The transition is from Christ’s death to the Resurrection. All the black covers of Holy Week are removed to expose the white festal covers and the priest vests in bright white vestments. It is on this day we commemorate Christ’s descent into Hades to free the souls of all the departed in history up to that moment.
